Outfield Territories
We’re excited to announce an update on how territories work in Outfield! With this feature, you can now create territories based on regions, postal codes, and default fields. You can also draw custom borders directly on the map. Whether you’re managing sales reps across the country or dividing up local field marketing efforts, the new territories feature gives you the flexibility.
Key Features of the New Territories Tool
- Create zones within a territory. Now, you can label your territory, this keeps your data clean and your setup process faster and more efficient.
- Access to a visual map view. This makes it much easier to see exactly where your reps are working, identify gaps in coverage, and strategize based on geographic insights.
- Description field, giving you the chance to add context, instructions, or key notes about the area. Whether it's listing top accounts, specifying rep responsibilities, or including coverage reminders, descriptions make it easier to manage territories at scale.
- Exclusion zones within a territory. If you’ve drawn a large region but need to block off a specific area (like a region assigned to another team or competitor-dominated market, you can now carve it out.
Why Does This Matter?
- Easier Rep Assignments: You can now assign sales reps to areas using zip codes, custom fields, or by drawing on a map, so the right rep is always in the right place.
- Better Tracking: It’s now simple to see how each area and rep is doing, find what’s working, and fix what’s not.
- More Flexibility: Teams can now share the same areas without confusion, helping everyone work together better and make smarter moves.
Best Practices
- Set Clear Territory Goals
Before creating a territory, ask yourself:
- Is this based on geography (ZIPs, cities)?
- Is it based on rep coverage, market type, or vertical?
- Do you want it for reporting, routing, or performance analysis?
Setting these goals will set a precedent for your newfound territories and assure that they stay structured and organized.
- Use Labels & Descriptions
Make sure your territory's names are clear and consistent to avoid confusion once your team scales and you have tens, or even hundreds of territories!
Use description fields to add useful notes like rep assignments, priority accounts, sales targets, or coverage instructions. This can become even more useful when territories begin to overlap.
- Use Exclusion Zones for Cleaner Coverage
If a team shares a general region but shouldn’t overlap on certain high-priority accounts or contract-protected areas, create exclusion zones. This ensures reps don’t waste time on accounts outside of their responsibility, and that reporting is accurate.
- Test Before Going Live
Once you’ve created a territory, make sure to double-check that it’s exactly what you want before assigning it to reps on the team. You can run a quick report or filter by that territory to double-check that all accounts populate as expected.
